一、签证 , Visa

#签证是主权国家主管机关颁发给外国公民并允许其入境、出境、过境的许可。

A visa is a permit granted to a foreign citizen by the competent authority of a sovereign state to allow him or her to enter, leave or transit.

#由主权国家的主管机关对外国公民提出的入境、过境、旅行、居留等申请做出明确决定后，在申请人所持的有效护照（或护照代用证件）上制作的一种文字签注，用以检验外国人是否合法入（出）境或停（居）留。

A written note made by the competent authority of a sovereign state on the valid passport (or passport substitute) of a foreign citizen after the competent authority of a sovereign state has made a clear decision on the application for entry, transit, travel, residence, etc., to check whether the foreigner has entered (exited) or stopped (resided) in the country legally.

#简单而言，以中国为例，签证就是允许外籍人士进出中国国境（绝大部分类别的签证有出入境次数限制），并短期（180天以下）在中国境内停留的凭证。

二、居留许可，Residence permit

#居留许可是允许外籍人士在中国境内长期居留（1年以上）的许可凭证。2005年开始启用，取代了之前的居留证。外籍人士可凭有效期内的居留许可不限次数进出中国大陆。

Residence permit is a certificate that allows foreigners to stay in China for a long time (more than 1 year). It came into operation in 2005, replacing the previous residence permit. Foreigners are allowed to enter and leave the Chinese mainland any number of times with their valid residence permits.

三、永居居留，Permanent residence

#中国永久居留是指外籍人士在中国居留期限不受限制。而拥有中国永久居留资格的外籍人士获得《外国人永久居留证》作为其在中国境内永久居留的合法身份证件。《外国人永久居留证》的俗称，即为中国绿卡。

Permanent residence in China means that foreigners can stay in China for unlimited periods of time. Foreign nationals with permanent residence status in China obtain a Foreigner Permanent Residence Permit as their legal identity document for permanent residence in China. Permanent Residence Permit for Foreigners is commonly known as the Chinese Green Card.
